How to Jump Start Your Car

Picture this: you're on a road trip with your family and you stop for a break. When you get back into your car and turn the ignition, nothing happens. Maybe you hear a clicking sound, but your car will not start. What now?

Most drivers have felt the dread and panic that come with a dead battery. As inconvenient as a dead battery can be, it's actually a pretty simple fix. All you need is a set of jumper cables, which every driver should keep handy, and a working vehicle for the jump start. Once you've found someone with a working car who's willing to help, park follow these simple steps to get your car working again:

  • Park the two vehicles with their front ends facing each other, but not touching. Put the vehicles in park, and make sure the keys of both vehicles have been removed.
  • Pop the hood of each vehicle and locate the battery (you can check your owner's manual if you're not sure what the battery looks like). In most vehicles, the battery terminals will be covered in red and black and have + and - signs on them.
  • Take your jumper cables, making sure the clamps do not touch each other. Attach the red (positive) cable to the positive battery terminal on the dead battery, then attach the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the working battery. Then connect the black (negative) cable to the negative terminal on the working battery. Next, take the other end of the black cable and do not attach it to the dead battery; instead, attach it to any other unpainted metal part of the dead car.
  • Start the working vehicle and wait a few minutes, revving the engine a few times. Then start the dead car.
  • When the dead car is finally running, disconnect the cables, starting with the black, then following with the red. Make sure the clamps do not touch while they are still attached to the cars. Then take a drive to allow the battery to recharge.
